True Joy Community Development Center (TJCDC) is an organization comprised of a fellowship of people joined together for the building and development of the community. We are pleased to offer the TJCDC Annual Scholarship Program. The goal of TJCDC is to make a financial contribution to exceptional high school graduates. Scholarships will be awarded in two categories; academic excellence and outstanding community service/volunteer. Awardees (deserving & qualified applicants) will receive scholarships ranging between $500 and $1,000.
Applications will be accepted from individuals aging from 16 to 19 years; graduating high school in 2010; and attending college as a freshman. Applicants must be a resident of the state of Maryland and a citizen of the USA. Any item in the below criteria with (**) are required documents. Packets without all required documents will not be considered for the scholarship. It is the applicant’s responsibility to forward all required documents to the address on the application by the required date.
Academic Scholarship Criteria

Must be a Graduating Senior within Harford County, Maryland school system

GPA: 3.0 or above with Official high school transcript (sealed) with first semester grades for current school year**

An acceptance letter from a 4 year college, university, or community college**

Two letters of recommendation from teachers and/or counselors (someone other than parents) **

Typed 250-300 word essay (Subject: “Why is Education Important”) attached to the 3 page application package.** This essay will be on plain bond paper, typed in an 11 or 12 font with 1 inch margins.
Community Service Scholarship Criteria

Must be a Graduating Senior within Harford County, Maryland school system

GPA: 2.8 or above with Official high school transcript (sealed) with first semester grades for current school year**

An acceptance letter from a 4 year college, university, or community college, technical institute**

Must have demonstrated merit in community service/ volunteer

Two letters of recommendation from educator, pastor, organization, or other community leader who has documented your community service (someone other than parents) **

Typed 250-300 word essay (Subject: “Why is Community Service Important”) attached to the 3 page application package.** This essay will be on plain bond paper, typed in an 11 or 12 font with 1 inch margins.
Note: All applicants must include a 2009 copy of the Student Aid Report (SAR)** See web site (www.fafsa.ed.gov) for more information on the FAFSA application procedures.
Notification Procedures All applicants must submit a complete application package postmarked no later than April 3, 2010.It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure the application package is complete and received on time. TJCDC will not notify applicants when items are missing. Incomplete or late applications will not be considered. Upon processing applications, the scholarship committee will notify applicant via telephone to set up a personal interview time. Recipients awarded will be notified via letter and must make an appearance at True Joy Ministries to accept the award, give a brief acceptance speech, and take photos for the local newspaper. The awards program date is tentatively scheduled for May 10, 2010. If unable to attend, the recipient forfeits the scholarship.
